Scope and Content Note

Two "Certificates of Constant" for Lord Kelvin's electric balance no. 440, issued November 13, 1895 at Lord Kelvin's Standardizing Laboratory, Glasgow and signed by Kelvin. Relate to engineering equipment in use at University of Arkansas in 1895. Thomson passed away in 1907 at his estate in Largs, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Biographical Note

William Thomson, 1st Baron Kelvin was a noted British physicist and engineer born in Belfast in 1824. He is the namesake for the kelvin temperature measurement, served as president of the Royal Society (1890-1895), and made major contributions to research in electricity, magnetism, thermodynamics, and hydrodynamics.
