Scope and Content Note
Typewritten transcript of the diary and journal of the Arkansas physician and clergyman, entitled, "Marion D. Steele Book, November AD 1852, Receipts and formulays, Powhaton Ark March 1st 1855, Diary." The material, which includes records of medicines prescribed and weddings performed January 13, 1859 to August 25, 1863, pertains to the history of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South and to the history of medicine in Lawrence County, Arkansas, 1855 to 1863.

Biographical Note
Marion DeKalb Steele was born in Bedford County, Tennessee on June 8, 1824. He began to study medicine at Louisville Medical College in 1832. In 1847, he established a medical practice in Strawberry, Lawrence County, Arkansas. He and his family moved to Northwest Arkansas in 1856 where Marion became a preacher. Steele continued to practice medicine until 1874 when he became a merchant and druggist. Steele died in Elm Springs, Arkansas on March 24, 1898.

The Marion DeKalb Steele Diary was transcribed from the original (in the possession of Rebecca Wasson) by Betsy Jones and George Bullard of Fayetteville, Arkansas and donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1958.
