Scope and Content Note

Correspondence, scrapbooks, photographs, reports, speeches, bulletins, and other records created or received by Lessie Stringfellow Read of Fayetteville, Ark., who was, at various times, State Chairman of Publicity for the Arkansas Federation of Women's Clubs; Arkansas editor of the General Federation of Women's Clubs' General Federation Magazine, and Publicity Chairman for the GFWC.

Most of the records, dated circa 1918-1922, pertain to the activities of the AFWC and the GFWC, particularly to the national organization's 14th Biennial Convention in Hot Springs, Ark., in 1918. Other organizations to whose activities the material relates include the Women's News Service, Inc.; the Authors and Composers Society of Arkansas; the League of American Pen Women; and, especially, the National American Woman Suffrage Association. One file contains Ethel Estes Sure's 1940-1941 correspondence related to the International Association of Altrusa Clubs.

Biographical Note

Lessie Stringfellow Read (1886-1971) was a Fayetteville, Arkansas-based newspaper editor, and was active with the Arkansas Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs, among other community organizations. She was, at various times, State Chairman of Publicity for the Arkansas Federation of Women's Clubs; Arkansas editor of the General Federation of Women's Clubs' General Federation Magazine, and Publicity Chairman for the GFWC.
