Arrangement of the Papers
The photographs are arranged by county according to flightline patterns. For each county, the flightlines and photo numbers along the flightlines have been drawn as a flightline index map for which the county general highway map serves as a base.
Each county set of aerial photographs has been organized into folders by flightline and photo numbers. A copy of the flightline index map is in the first folder for each county set.
Acquisition Information
The Aerial Photographs of Arkansas were donated to Special Collections by the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department in October 1987.
In October 1987, an ongoing donation of aerial photographs, organized in sets by county, was initiated with the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, Little Rock, Arkansas. In the future, additional sets of aerial photographs will be donated to Special Collections as the sets become outdated for highway purposes.
Each year the highway department has new sets of aerial photographs produced for approximately eight counties in the state (Arkansas has 75 counties). Current aerial photographs are required for the highway department's planning needs, so the superseded prints are no longer used. The Special Collections Department of the the University Libraries, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, will serve as the repository for the superseded photographic prints. The film negatives, however, will remain with the highway department.
Initially, seven sets of aerial photographs have been donated and processed. These represent the counties of Sebastian, Washington, Crawford, Garland, Grant, Hot Springs, and Saline.
