Scope and Content Note

Letters, receipts, invoices, military orders and other documents pertaining to the work of Charles B. Johnson and his partner, Marshall Grimes, contractors with the Confederate States Army for provisioning Reserve Indians and troops; to the transport and supply functions of the Trans Mississippi Department, C. S. A., in Arkansas, Texas, and the Indian Territory; and to relations between the Confederate States of America and the several Indian nations in the area. Correspondents and persons to whom the material relates include Major Gen. Thomas Carmichael Hindman, Maj. Gen. Theophilus Hunter Holmes, Col. Robert Crittenden Newton, Albert Pike, William Quesenbury, Major Thomas Lanigan, and others. Places to which the material relates include: Fort Smith, Little Rock, Prairie Grove, Van Buren, and Waldron, Ark.; Bonham, Mansfield, Paris, and Sherman, Texas; Washington, D.C.; and Fort Washita.
