Scope and Content Note

Materials relating to the family of Joseph Hubbard Jones of Desha County, Arkansas. The bulk of the collection consists of family photographs, and includes images from a 1916 flood in Watson, Arkansas. Also included is a positive photocopy of reminiscences entitled "Sketch of My Army Life from 1861 to 1865," by Corporal Joseph Hubbard Jones, Company D, First Arkansas Infantry. Apparently written in the late nineteenth century, this autobiographical essay by Jones is a thumbnail sketch of his military experiences during the Civil War.

Biographical / Historical

Joseph Hubbard Jones (1841-1905) was an Arkansas farmer who served as a corporal in Company D, First Arkansas Infantry, C.S.A. during the Civil War. He married Mary Margaret (Maggie) Brown Jones in 1869. The couple had several children, including Irene, Sallie, Luther, and Grover Cleveland Jones. The collection donor, Margaret Jones Bolsterli, is the daughter of Grover Cleveland Jones (1886-1957) and Zena Estelle Cason Jones (1889-1953).

The Jones family is the subject of Margaret Jones Bolsterli's 2008 book, During Wind and Rain, A Delta Family Album: 1895-1900.

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged by format and topic. Materials in Box 1 were removed from non-archival plastic sleeves during processing for preservation reasons; however, the donor’s identifying labels have been retained to accompany the materials to which they pertain, and original groupings have been retained.

Acquisition Information

The Joseph Hubbard Jones History (Folder MC 322) was donated to the Special Collections Division by Ila Marie Preddy of Watson, Arkansas in April 1978, through Margaret Jones Bolsterli. Additional materials (Box 1) were donated to Special Collections by Margaret Jones Bolsterli in September 2018.

Processing Information

The Joseph Hubbard Jones History was processed by Nan Lawler; completed in September 1986. The collection was retitled “Joseph Hubbard Jones Family Papers” and the finding aid revised when additional materials from the donor (Box 1) were incorporated into the collection by Katrina Windon in May 2021.
