Scope and Content Note

Political campaign and other material relating to Jeff Davis.

Two printed broadsides, issued during the Arkansas Democratic Party primary campaign of 1903 by state Supreme Court Justice Carroll David Wood and by supporters of his gubernatorial candidacy in opposition to the re-election of Jeff Davis, together with an affidavit, executed at Van Buren, Arkansas March 22, 1912 by four citizens of that city, testifying that Davis, candidate for the Democratic nomination to a second term in the United States Senate, was drunk when he spoke in that city on March 19, 1912. Copy of a play by George Stockard, "King Jeff the First."

Biographical Note

Jeff Davis was born in Rocky Comfort, Little River County, Arkansas, May 6, 1862. In 1878, his family moved to Dover, then to Russelville. He was for a time a student at the University of Arkansas, and later graduated in law from Vanderbilt University at the age of 19. He opened a law office in Russelville in 1882. Jeff Davis soon advanced to a place in the foremost ranks of the legal profession in the state. In 1900, he was elected governor of Arkansas, winning over H. L. Remmel, the Republican candidate. He was re-elected in 1902 and in 1904, the only person up to that time to be elected to three terms as governor. In 1906, he was elected U.S. senator, and again in 1912, but died Jan. 3, 1913, two months before the expiration of his first term.
