Scope and Content Note

Ledger and sales journals recording the commercial transactions of D. C. Williams, general merchant of Pine Bluff and Van Buren, Arkansas. The entries for July, 1842 through October, 1844 pertain to Williams' business in Pine Bluff. Leaving that city in 1845, he settled in Van Buren, and entries for the period November, 1846 through August, 1869 reflect his conduct of business there in partnership, from time to time, with Edward Cunningham, John Henry, and William Whitfield.

Acquisition Information

The David C. Williams Account Books were acquired from several sources. Volume 1 was purchased in February 1939 from Orion Book Service of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Volume 2 was donated to the Libraries circa 1939-1962. Volumes 3-4 were purchased from Lester Hargrett of Washington, D.C., by Arkansas History, in January 1962.
