Biographical Note

Napoleon, Arkansas was founded in the 1830s at the confluence of the Arkansas and Mississippi River. The town was the county seat of Desha County, Arkansas and was a wealthy port town. A cutoff canal was dug nearby Napoleon in 1863 by the Union to avoid sending ships through Beula Bend, a notorious Confederate ambush point. This canal eroded the banks of the town, making it more prone to flooding and unsafe for habitation. The town was abandoned around 1870 and now lies under the waters of the Mississippi River.
