Biographical Note

William Hope Harvey was born near Buffalo, West Virginia on August 16, 1851. Harvey became a lawyer in 1870 and moved to Colorado in 1884 where he operated a productive silver mine until 1888. Harvey became an advocate of free silver in the 1890s, gaining his nickname of "Coin" from a book he wrote entitled Coin's Financial School. Harvey moved to Arkansas in 1900 after purchasing a large amount of land near Rogers, Arkansas which he named "Monte Ne". He intended to build a luxury resort but his work ended with the sale and foreclosure of the property in the 1920s. Harvey passed away at Monte Ne on February 11, 1936.

Acquisition Information

The William Hope "Coin" Harvey Biographical Sketch and Reprints, Items 1-5, were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries on March 5, 1964 by Homer Croy of New York, New York. Item 6 was donated by Clara Bernice Kennan in November 1973.
