Organizational History

The Elkins Extension Homemakers Club, under the umbrella of the Washington County Extension Homemakers Council and the statewide Arkansas Extension Homemakers Council, is one of a number of nonprofit groups organized in rural Arkansas communities that are dedicated to continuing education, particularly in domestic and agricultural areas, and to community service. The club began as the Elkins Home Demonstration Club, under the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service; by 1966, its name had changed to the Elkins Extension Homemakers Club. Home demonstration clubs began as part of a movement in the United States, jump-started by the 1914 Smith-Lever Act, to improve the quality of life of those living in rural communities and to bring educational opportunities to local communities.
