Scope and Content Note
Letters dated at Washington, D. C. April 19, 1830 and April 25, 1831, from President Jackson to, respectively, Samuel F. Hays at Nashville, Tennessee and the Reverend Hardy M. Cryer, near Gallatin, Tennessee. The earlier, one-page letter deals with personal affairs, principally with the care of Jackson's garden and his wife's grave at "The Hermitage." The second letter, of eight pages, discusses political affairs, especially the resignation of Martin Van Buren and John Henry Eaton from Jackson's cabinet, and other events, following upon "the Eaton affair"; Jackson's opposition to the Bank of the United States; his political controversy with John Caldwell Calhoun and Duff Green; and his interest in the political activities of Hugh Lawson White, Littleton Waller Tazewell, and John Tyler.

The Andrew Jackson Letters were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1958 by Dorsey Dee Jones of Fayetteville, Arkansas and in 1966 by Mrs. H. L. Pickerill of Martinsville, Indiana through Katherine Clark Hantz of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
