Biographical Note

Elias Rector DuVal was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on August 13, 1836. He graduated from Arkansas College in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1854 and went on to study medicine at Louisville Medical School and then University of Pennsylvania Medical School where he graduated in 1858. He served in the United States Army as a surgeon in New Mexico Territory until returning to Fort Smith to establish a private practice in 1859.

DuVal served for the Confederate Army as a surgeon for the duration of the American Civil War. Afterwards, he returned again to his practice in Fort Smith. In the 1870s, he was a leader in the organizing and advocacy of physicians, co-founding the Sebastian County Medical Society and serving as its president from 1871 to 1878. He also co-founded the Arkansas State Medical Association in 1870 and served as its president in 1874. In his leadership positions he advocated for more modern medical practices in Arkansas.

DuVal also helped to co-found the Arkansas Medical Society in 1875 and served on its judicial council for the next ten years. Towards the end of his life he also served on the Board of Visitors to the Arkansas Industrial University medical department. DuVal passed away in Fort Smith on October 7, 1885.
