Biographical Note
John Lewis Ferguson was born near Nashville, Arkansas on March 1, 1926. He became an ordained Missionary Baptist minister in 1951 and obtained his bachelor's in history from Henderson State Teachers College the following year. He went on to obtain a master's in history form the University of Arkansas in 1952 and a doctorate in history from Tulane University in 1960. Ferguson authored several books on Arkansas history throughout his professional career.
Ferguson served as head of the Department of Social Studies at Central Baptist College in Conway, Arkansas from 1952 to 1956. He then went on to teach history from 1958 to 1960 at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and then Arkansas Polytechnic College (now Arkansas Tech University) in Russellville, Arkansas. In 1960, he became director of the Arkansas History Commission in Little Rock, serving this commission until his retirement in 2005. Ferguson passed away at his home in Little Rock on March 25, 2006.
