Biographical Note

James D. Morrisett owned a plantation in Section 25, Township 10 south, Range 25 west of Hempstead County, Arkansas.

Spencer was a 15-year-old boy enslaved by Morrisett as of May 1862.

Acquisition Information

The Bill of Sale for Spencer, an Enslaved Boy, was donated to the Special Collections Division by John Henderson of Farmington, Arkansas, on February 20, 2020. Henderson purchased the document at an estate sale and used it in his classroom as a history teacher in Harrison, Arkansas.
