Scope and Content Note

Printed broadside. "Census Table for 1860. ....abstract of the census of the State of Arkansas...." Published November 14, 1860, by authority of the Governor. Shows, for all counties except Greene, Jackson, and Van Buren: white population, tabulated by numbers of males and females, and indicating the numbers of individuals reporting certain mental or physical disabilities; total population of enslaved persons, indicating the numbers of individuals reporting certain mental or physical disabilities; the population of Black freedpeople; the number of persons dying the previous year; the number of schools; and the number and dollar value of churches. Appended is the text of a letter, dated November 5, 1860, from M. Brayman, President of the Cairo and Fulton Railroad Co., to the Governor, "printed for information of the General Assembly of the State of Arkansas."

Biographical Note

Elias Nelson Conway was the fifth governor of Arkansas, serving in this position from 1852 to 1860. He was born in Green County, Tennessee on May 17, 1812 and moved to Arkansas in 1833, following his brothers to Little Rock. Before his term as governor, he served as the first state auditor from 1836-1849. Conway remained in Little Rock for the rest of his life, passing away on February 28, 1892.
