Biographical Note

Benjamin Louis Eulalie de Bonneville near Paris, France on April 14, 1796 and moved to the United States in 1803. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1815. After his graduation he served at posts in New England, Mississippi, Arkansas, Indian Territory, and Missouri. He was promoted to Captain in 1824. Bonneville spent much of the first half of the 1830s traveling the American West with his journeys later chronicled by Washington Irving. Bonneville would go on to continue his military service, serving in both the Mexican-American War and American Civil War. He was awarded the rank of Brevet Brigadier General and ultimately retired to Fort Smith, Arkansas where he passed away on June 12, 1878.
