Biographical Note
Solon Borland was born in Nansemond County, Virginia on September 21, 1808. Borland studied medicine in Philadelphia and Louisville. During the Mexican-American War, he was commissioned as a major in the Arkansas Mounted Infantry Regiment under Archibald Yell. After the war, Borland was elected as a United States Senator from Arkansas, serving in this position from 1848 to 1853.
Borland continued his medical practices in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1854. During the American Civil War, Borland served as a commander in the seizure of Fort Smith, commander of Pitman's Ferry, and colonel of the 3rd Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. Borland resigned from service of the Confederacy in June 1862 and traveled to Texas where he passed away on January 1, 1864.
