Scope and Content Note
Statement, unsigned, of John Mahan of Mercer County, Kentucky, summarizing his military record in the Revolutionary War. A poem on the verso of the undated document, which has been overwritten with various kinds of material in differing hands, is dated September 6, 1828.

Biographical Note
John Mahan was originally from Ireland, born 1755. He enlisted as a non-commissioned officer in the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment at Kittanning, PA on August 16, 1776. He was provided an honorable discharge in 1779 and rejoined the military in the 9th Virginia Regiment, based at Fort Pitt in Pittsburgh, PA. Mahan moved to Kentucky after the Revolutionary War and lived on his farm until his death in 1830.

The John Mahan Declaration were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1944 by Walter Basil Mahan of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
