Biographical Note

The Harmonial Vegetarian Society was a communal living experiment with a focus on a strict vegetarian lifestyle and shared property. The society existed for four years and was the only utopian commune of the nineteenth-century in Arkansas. The society was based out of Harmony Springs, Benton County, Arkansas and was started by James E. Spencer.

The Harmonial Vegetarian Society Land Sale Indenture was purchased by Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1988 from South by Southwest Books of Fayetteville, Arkansas.
