Biographical Note
John Clinton Futrall was born on March 9, 1873 in Jackson, Tennessee to Thomas Andrew and Emma Headen Futrall. The Futrall family later moved to Marianna, Arkansas. After graduating from the Marianna Male and Female Institute in 1888, John Futrall attended the Arkansas Industrial University, later named the University of Arkansas, for two years before transferring to the University of Virginia. He returned to the University of Arkansas in 1894. That same year, Futrall organized and coached the first Cardinals football team, later named the Arkansas Razorbacks, from 1894 to 1896. In 1898 he married Annie Gaines Duke from Fayetteville, Arkansas and had three children. In 1913, the Board of Trustees appointed Futrall as the acting President of the University of Arkansas as they searched for a replacement. In 1914, he became the full President of the university. During his tenure, he appointed a dean to the College of Agriculture to prevent the Arkansas Farm Bureau from taking the college from the University of Arkansas. He oversaw the establishment of the College of Business and School of Law and the construction of the Vol Walker Hall, the Agriculture Building, the Chemistry Building, the Engineering Hall, the Women’s Gymnasium, the Chi Omega Greek Theatre, and the Razorback stadium. On September 12, 1939 Futrall died in a car accident on his way back from a business trip in Little Rock near West Fork, Arkansas. A student union building that was completed in 1939 was renamed the Futrall Memorial Hall in his honor.
