Biographical Note

James A. Sewell was a merchant located in Roseville, Arkansas. He was born in approximately 1828 and married Elizabeth "Betsy" Stringer in 1864 at which time he became step father of John M. Sewell and Pink Sewell, the subjects of the letter.

The James Sewell Letter was donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1975 by David R. Perdue of Pine Bluff, Arkansas through Dean J. J. Hudson and President C. E. Bishop of the University of Arkansas.
