Scope and Content Note

Autographed letter dated "Helena, Feb. 1st 1863" and addressed to unidentified "Dear Sir," recounting the experiences and impressions of a U. S. Army soldier, specifically as regards his unidentified company's departure from Columbus, Kentucky, Jan. 12, 1863; its brief sojourn in Memphis; its arrival at Helena, Arkansas, Jan. 17; its participation in an expedition up the White River with the "15th fleet of thirtysix vessels" and in a brief armed encounter with Confederate forces at DeValls Bluff, Arkansas; its return to Helena Jan. 22; and its subsequent encampment there.
