Scope and Content Note
The original archival collection at Columbia University contains materials of Colonel Peter Wellington Alexander, 1825-1886. The collection totals 30 linear ft. (ca. 7,500 items in 18 boxes and ca.1275 newspapers). It contains Correspondence, manuscripts, documents, and newspapers. These include over four hundred letters to Alexander, as well as miscellaneous letters and telegrams; some of his manuscripts and notes; business records of his law firm; military documents of the western divisions of the Confederate Army; copybooks and letter books; and complete and partial newspapers and clippings from the various Southern newspapers (in particular, The Savannah Republican, the Daily Dispatch of Richmond, and the Advertiser and Register of Mobile) which carried Alexander's dispatches. The collection was the gift of Mrs. Robert P. Hamilton, in 1974.
The collection held in at the University of Arkansas includes eight reels of microfilm, [numbered 1-3, 4.1, 4.2, 5-7]. Correspondence, general and special orders, field reports, telegrams, and other documents of the Confederate forces in Arkansas. Correspondents include Elias Cornelius Boudinot, Samuel Ryan Curtis, Thomas C. Hindman, Francis J. Herron, Theophilus H. Holmes, Robert Edward Lee, R. C. Newton, Albert Pike, William Quesenbury, John Selden Roane, and Stand Watie.

Biographical Note
Colonel Peter Wellington Alexander (1825-1886) allied himself and served with the Confederate States of America. Colonel Alexander was a Georgia-born editor and Civil War correspondent.
