Biographical Note

Lewis Evans, born in 1799, was an early settler and the first sheriff of Washington County, Arkansas, and founder of Evansville, Arkansas, (formerly Vineyard Township). He organized the Washington County Gold Mining Company in 1849 and was a captain of the wagon train from Fayetteville, Arkansas, to the gold fields of California. Isaac Murphy, Arkansas Governor (1864-1868), was in Lewis Evans's company.

Acquisition Information

The George Phillips Collection were donated to Special Collections, University of Arkansas Libraries in 1990 by Mrs. George Phillips of Brookings, South Dakota.
