Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of two scrapbooks. The first contains Daniel Hon's Bachelor of Laws diploma from Cumberland University, Lebanon, Tennessee, 1885, and the Attorney's License, 1885; two United Daughters of Confederacy certificates, 1920; a National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution certificate, 1928; Mabel Hon's (later Mrs. J.P. Wood's) Normal School certificate, 1913, an Expression Course diploma, 1914, and a Bachelor of Arts Diploma,1914, all from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; University Extension Home Study certificates from Columbia University, New York, 1927 and 1932, Life Membership Certificate, Arkansas Alumni Association, Inc., 1966; and other documents.

The second scrapbook contains J.P. Woods' childhood and family photographs; pictures of J.P. Woods, his fellow students, including a picture of the Lee Literary Society of which Woods was a member, teachers/professors at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville; World War I period pictures (mostly the US Army official photos) ca pages 13-20; studio portraits; photographs depicting Woods' professional career and his civic engagements; and J.P and Mabel Woods familial pictures (including the photos of Powell, Pendleton, and Gaines Woods in US Army uniforms during the World War II-page 32). Material from Woods' years at the University of Arkansas includes newspaper clippings, announcements, programs-among them a 1909 Thirty-Sixth Annual Commencement Exercise of the University of Arkansas, song lyrics, and other papers. The scrapbook further contains newspaper clippings mostly about J.P. Woods; letters (among them a letter of June 29, 1957, signed by John F. Kennedy and a Christmas greeting card featuring John F. Kennedy and his family, 1958-both items on page 49), programs, postal and greeting cards; telegrams; US Army Field Messages; name cards; obituaries; and other items and memorabilia including the John Harvey and Mary E. Powell Woods Marriage License, 1879 (page 46).

It also contains the following J.P. Woods' material: Attorney License, 1912 (page 48); an Arkansas State Police Commission membership certificate, 1935, (envelope--page 10); US Army discharge papers, 1919 (envelope--page 12); Purple Heart Award, 1966 (page 37); other miscellaneous certificates and awards; and J.P. and Mabel Woods' Marriage Certificate, 1919 (page 32). The Mabel (Hon) Woods' scrapbook material includes her childhood, adulthood, and family pictures, newspaper clippings, and other items.

Biographical Note

J.P. Woods was born to John Harvey Woods, a prominent attorney of Eastern Arkansas, and Mary Powell Woods on December 25, 1886, in Izard County, Arkansas. He received his undergraduate education from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1909 and legal education from the University of Arkansas Law School in 1912. Woods practiced law continuously in Fort Smith, Arkansas, since 1912 except for a two-year period when he served in the US Army during the World War I. In 1919, Woods married Mabel Fairfax Hon, daughter of Judge Daniel Hon, attorney and circuit judge of Sebastian and Scott Counties, Arkansas. Mabel Hon graduated from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, in 1914 and later did graduate work at Emerson College in Boston, Massachusetts. She taught speech at Clarendon College, Texas. J.P. and Mabel Woods had four sons: Powell W., Pendleton, Gaines, and Daniel H. Woods. J.P. Woods was a leader in civic, church, and governmental work. He formed a law partnership with Daniel Hon in 1915 and later became a member of the law firm of Daily and Woods, Fort Smith, Arkansas. He was a member of the American Bar Association and served by appointment of the Arkansas Supreme Court on the Bar Rules Committee (1939-1958) and as Committee Chairman from 1946 to 1958. His past public service included service on the Carnegie Library Board, Fort Smith, Fort Smith School Board 1929-1947, Fort Smith Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army Board, and Boys Scouts of America. He was appointed a member of the Arkansas Police Commission in 1935 and served as president of the University of Arkansas Alumni Association. J.P. Woods was named a "Lawyer Citizen of the Year" in 1967 and is a recipient of the Purple Heart Award (1966) for his bravery during World War I action in France, where he sustained serious injuries. In 1975, a newly opened Woods Elementary School in Fort Smith, Arkansas, was named in honor of J.P. Woods' service on the Fort Smith School Board.
