Scope and Content Note

Letter dated at Mountain Post Office, Washington County, Arkansas October 1, 1836, from Truxton Lowell to his brother, Captain James Lowell, in Bath, Maine. Pertaining to personal and familial affairs, to the writer's journey from Pennsylvania to Arkansas and into the Creek Nation, and to his experiences while teaching school in the Cherokee Nation and in Arkansas, the letter also describes the country around Fayetteville, Arkansas, narrates something of the writer's hunting experiences in the area, and comments on the economic opportunities available in Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Truxton Lowell was originally from Bath, Maine and was one of four sons of John Lowell. Truxton traveled to Arkansas from the east coast in the 1830s and sent an account of the experience to his brother with this letter. Truxton appears to have passed away some time before 1856.
