Biographical Note

First established in 1878, the Arkansas Alumni Association’s early stated goal was to keep alumni aware of events at the University of Arkansas. This function has primarily been performed via a series of publications. In 1914, the University Bulletin began to publish irregular alumni issues which continued until 1924. In 1924, the Association began publishing its own regular publication, Arkansas Alumnus, which became simply “Arkansas” in 1988 and the publication of which persists to present. The Association was legally incorporated in 1970, becoming Arkansas Alumni Association, Inc. Article III of their constitution describes the purpose of the organization: 1. To promote the welfare of the University and its graduates and former students. 2. To promote the cause of higher education. 3. To render service to graduates and former students and to perpetuate the associations formed during college years. 4. To build a greater University than the taxpayers alone are able to build.

The Arkansas Alumni Associations’ members include all graduates and former students of the University of Arkansas. In addition, those who show a legitimate interest in the welfare of the university or who has performed a significant service for the university may be considered associate or honorary members. Leadership of the organization consists of a Board of Directors, voted on by Association members, which votes on an Executive Committee and elects various officers.
