Biographical Note

University Relations is an office of the University of Arkansas responsible for the marketing of the university, coordinating the messaging of the university across the campus, and publishes official news releases for the university. The office also facilitates communication with alumni, manages the University of Arkansas brand, and supports the annual publication of the catalog of studies, among other operations.

The functions of the office of University Relations were first handled by instructors of journalism in the English department at the University. J. Wainwright Evans, Murray Sheehan, J. Wymond French, and Victor Portman were all instructors who were also responsible for publicizing the University. With the hiring of Walter J. Lemke, the University News Bureau was formally founded. Lemke headed the bureau until 1939 when it was split from the Department of Journalism and Sam Schwieger was hired as its director. William J. Good succeeded Schwieger in 1943 running the bureau until the creation of the Division of Information Services in 1958. Information Services supplanted the University News Bureau, first led by Storm Whaley in its inaugural year. William (Bill) Hughes replaced Whaley in 1959 and served as director until 1986. In 1989, the division was renamed the Office of University Relations operating under the Division of University Advancement.
