Scope and Content Note

Typescript memoirs of Tom Jim Hudson, entitled "My Experiences- In and Around the Coal Mines." His account mentions the dangers of working in the coal mines, including his own workplace injuries, as well as working during World War I to supply coal to Camp Pike. The latter portion of the memoir details his experiences working for University of Arkansas' Buildings and Grounds. Hudson's employers in Arkansas included the Western Coal Co., the Blue Hills Coal Co., the Melton Coal Co., and, after he left the mining industry, Jerpee Poultry Co. and the University of Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Tom Jim Hudson was born December 17, 1886, in Alix, Arkansas. He worked for Western Coal Co. at Mine No. 3 beginning at age 16, and was a member of the United Mine Workers Union. He later moved to the Melton and Dodson Mine. He moved to Fayetteville with his family in 1932; they took in boarders while he returned to mining as an engineer, and then worked for Jerpee Poultry Co. He then began working for University of Arkansas' Buildings and Grounds, moving up to be a lead custodian. He retired from the University in 1960. Hudson passed away in October 1984, and is buried in Fairview Memorial Gardens in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Acquisition Information

The Tom Jim Hudson Reminiscences were donated to the Special Collections Department by Carole Lane of Fayetteville, Arkansas, in March 2017.
