Scope and Content Note
The collection consists almost entirely of negatives: 302 glass plate negatives (only a few dated, these from 1900 to 1909) and about 2600 film negatives (dated from 1912 to 1951, most dated in the 1930s and 1940s). The collection also includes movies, prints (61 vintage prints and 102 prints made in the course of processing), correspondence, and other papers.
Index of Names
Explanations
Most of the negatives were originally in boxes or envelopes, with some sort of information written on the box or envelope.
Most of the studio portraits were identified by name, although the name may be that of the customer rather than that of the subject. In many cases, more than one name was on the envelope. Although an attempt was made to identify each negative with one name, usually it was not possible. The name index contains all the names on the envelopes, with a question mark (?) to denote a possible link of name with Image number. Other information on envelopes may include a "lot number," the date, the studio to which the negative was sent, the cost, and the address to whom the prints were to be sent. If the envelope had no significant information written on it, the date (if any) was included in the index entry and the envelope discarded.
Many of the family pictures also had some sort of (usually incomplete) identification. In some cases the name on the envelope appears to be the name of the photographer, usually a Ganner child or grandchild. Portraits, formal and informal, identified by name have been added to the index. When only a first name or nickname has been given, the name is enclosed in quotation marks unless the person could be identified ("Sister," for example, has been identified as Elizabeth Rose Ganner). In some cases, a box or envelope of negatives was identified by name (possibly the name of the photographer), but the negatives included a variety of subjects. In these cases, the Image numbers have been added to the index under the name given and a short description of subject matter has been added within square brackets. In general, subject headings are not included in the index.
Aside from putting last name first, the word order and parentheses and other punctuation are as written on the envelopes.
An asterisk indicates a cellulose nitrate negative. The numbering sequence continues as though the negative still existed, although it does not. The Image number will be found on the print (Series 5) and on the envelope or correspondence (Series 4), if any.
To try to avoid confusion between dates and certain Image numbers, all dates are followed by a colon and the corresponding Image number(s) are then followed by a semi-colon.

Biographical Note
John Hudelson Ganner was born November 17, 1864, in England. He came to the United States in 1881 and to Russellville in 1887. On February 16, 1892, he married Alberta Russell (1873-1952; frequently identified as Bert or Bertie), granddaughter of Dr. Thomas A. Russell, for whom Russellville was named. Her sister, Anna May Russell (born July 13, 1876, and usually called May, sometimes spelled Mae), was also a photographer and apparently took over the Ganner Studio when her brother-in-law retired, probably in the mid-1920s. The Ganner children included John Russell (1892-1979), Claude Neil (1896-1978; the donor's grandfather), Harold Lee (1900-1965), and Elizabeth Rose (1903-1985). Ganner died July 3, 1948, and May Russell died June 25, 1969.
According to the donor, the collection covers mostly Pope and Yell counties, Russellville, Dardanelle, Ozark, and Conway. Most of the material is unidentified or only partially identified. Most portraits, both glass and film negatives, have been retouched, apparently with pencil. Instructions on one envelope (Image 1443) include the note, "This retouching is nothing but an oil pencil[;] rub off with cotton or soft cloth."
