In 1978, Gearhart was appointed to the steering committee in preparation of the 1984 Hendrix centennial. In 1980, Gearhart was promoted to Vice President of Development. During this time, he was elected as a trustee to the Southwest District of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

David Gearhart left the University of Arkansas for a time to work at Pennsylvania State University from 1985 to 1995. In 1985, Gearhart became Vice President for Development and University Relations. He was a lead supporter for the Division of Development and University Relations for the Campaign for Penn State, a fundraising campaign to collect $200 million in five years.
