Scope and Content Note
The material relating to Clark's bid for himself or his friends to be appointed U. S. Marshall dates from 1932 to 1940. It comprises primarily copies of letters of reference in Clark's behalf, but also includes two petitions and an incomplete index created by Clark of the reference letters. The general correspondence spans 1931-1940. It is primarily business correspondence related to Clark's banking interests and involvement with the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce. Some political matters involving Senators Hattie W. Caraway and Joe T. Robinson and Congressman Ben Cravens are also discussed, as is the U. S. Bureau of Fisheries.

Biographical Note
The material chiefly concerns Clark's application to be appointed United States Marshall for the Western District of Arkansas, and his involvement with banking and the Chamber of Commerce. A lesser amount of material concerns his careers as mayor of Texarkana and as regional director of the Home Owners Loan Corporation.

Acquisition Information
The August Barnwell Clark Papers Addendum was donated to the Special Collections Department by his daughter, Georgia H. Clark of Fayetteville, Arkansas on February 10, 1986. Additional materials (Folders 14-19) were donated to Special Collections by his son, Joe Clark, in March 1993.
