The records of the Arkansas Chapter of NOW reflect the development and growth of the organization throughout the state during the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Administrative files document chapter development, conferences, membership drives, and fundraising efforts state-wide, as well as in various county chapters. Materials pertain to numerous women's issues including reproductive rights, economic and educational justice, racism and diversity, politics, lesbian and gay rights, health issues, violence against women, the Equal Rights Amendment, child-care, and civil rights. Files also document the establishment of task forces and political action committees to address these and other issues which affect women. Also included are records pertaining to the Fayetteville Chapter of NOW which later became the Northwest Arkansas Chapter of NOW. The collection contains correspondence, reports, newspaper clippings, manuals, budgets, notes, brochures, publications, conference files, committee files, legislative updates, public notices, newsletters, photographs, and audio-visual materials.

The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. When this finding aid was completed, NOW had 500,000 contributing members and 550 chapters in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since its founding in 1966, NOW's goal has been "to take action" to bring about equality for all women. NOW activists use both traditional and non-traditional means to push for social change. NOW activists do extensive electoral and lobbying work and bring lawsuits. They also organize mass marches, rallies, pickets, non-violent civil disobedience and immediate, responsive "zap" actions.
