Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of Beth Brickell’s investigative research into the 1957 disappearance of Arkansas lawyer Maud Crawford, as well as copies of her publications regarding the case. The research includes transcripts of more than 1,500 interviews conducted by Brickell with Camden residents and persons of interest in the case.

Biographical Note

Beth Brickell is a writer, actress, and producer based in Sherman Oaks, California.

Brickell was born November 13, 1936, in Brinkley, Arkansas, and grew up in Pine Bluff and Camden. She earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from the University of Arkansas in 1958. In 1986, she published a series of investigative articles in the Arkansas Gazette regarding the unsolved 1957 disappearance of lawyer Maud Crawford from her home in Camden, Arkansas. Brickell's research on the Crawford case also led to two books, The Disappearance of Maud Crawford (2013) and In Their Own Voice: Interviews from the Maud Crawford Investigation; Or, How a Sociopath Committed the Perfect Murder and Corrupted a Town (2018).

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged and described in two series:

  1. Series 1. Research Materials
  2. Series 2. Writings

Within each series, materials reflect the groupings in which materials were received, and notes have been made to indicate when materials were removed from original binders for preservation reasons. The bulk of the research materials were arranged by the creator into a series of 15 binders, labeled alphabetically (A-0) and by content topics and formats.

Acquisition Information

The Beth Brickell Research Materials on Maud Crawford were donated to the Special Collections Department by Beth Brickell of Sherman Oaks, California, on August 28, 2018. Materials were received in two shipments.
