Delia Wagner Price Family Papers

 Collection
Identifier: MS P93

Scope and Content Note

The collection of Delia Wagner Price family history materials ca. 1928-1952, documents the early history and settlement of Crawford and Franklin counties, in western Arkansas. Specifically, the biographical sketches, notebooks, obituaries, clippings, and related materials in the collection focus upon a particular area of the two counties, Mulberry Valley. The papers have been arranged into two series: typescripts, clippings, and related materials pertaining to the settlement of Franklin and Crawford Counties, n. d.; and biographical sketches and related materials, re early Franklin and Crawford County settlers, ca. 1930-1945.

The typescripts, clippings, and related materials pertaining to the settlement of Franklin and Crawford Counties, n. d., consists of clippings; and typescripts of a notebook (December, 1946) by Delia Price, and a Mulberry, Arkansas Old Tan Yard Ledger. The clippings deal with such subjects as early Mulberry Valley settlements; the death of Mormon Missionary Parley P. Pratt near Alma, Arkansas in 1857; Crawford County settler George Washington Sims, the 1839 Cane Hill murders of the William Wright Family; and the Bank of Mulberry, 1902- 1952. The typescript copy of a notebook by Mrs. Delia Price, December, 1946, is valuable for its biographical sketches of such early Mulberry Valley settlers as Solomon Wagoner, Captain William Russell, Jr.; and the Bean, Wagoner, and Quesenbury families. The notebook also cites obituaries and articles about early Mulberry Valley settlers found in various Arkansas newspapers. The typescript of a "Ledger from the Old Tan Yard at Mulberry 1836-1837" consists of financial transactions of hides received, and some biographical information pertaining to the Quesenbury and Bean families. The majority of the Price Collection is comprised of a series of biographical sketches, clippings, and related materials (ca. 1930-1945) pertaining to early settlers in Franklin and Crawford Counties. The biographical sketches are of settlers who were either not included in Goodspeed's History of Benton, Washington, Caroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas (Chicago, Goodspeed Publishing Company, 1889), or only briefly mentioned.

This series includes files on Major William Russell, Sr. and his son, Captain William Russell, Jr.; the Wagner and Bean families; and William Minor ("Bill Cush") Quesenbury [ or Quisenberry] and the Quesenbury Family. The file of miscellaneous biographical sketches, obituaries, notebooks, clippings, and related materials contains some information on the pioneer families mentioned above. Among the Russell sketches is a typescript copy of a letter of remembrance from President Andrew Jackson to Captain William Russell (dated July 8, 1844), concerning the annexation of Texas, the Whig Party in Tennessee, and other matters. The file on the Bean Family includes a biographical sketch of Mark Bean, an Arkansas state legislator (for the terms 1833, 1842, and 1844) and salt works owner. This series, with the exception of the materials dealing with the Quesenburys, documents the early settlement of Mulberry Valley.

The most significant materials in the collection are the biographical sketches, diary, clippings, and other materials relating to William Minor ("Bill Cush") Quesenbury and the Quesenbury Family. Included among the materials on "Bill Cush" is a typescript of his article, "Medicine is not a new Science", ca. 1843-1853; a typescript copy of a diary by his wife, Adaline Quesenbury, January 1-May 23, 1853; and a series on four articles entitled, "Bill Cush, Early Individualist", which appeared in the Arkansas Gazette in late 1940. The remainder of the Quesenbury file is comprised of correspondence from Beulah Blake to Delia Price, and clippings, regarding the Quesenbury Family.
