Biographical Note
The University of Arkansas was created through the Morrill Act of 1862 which provided means for states to establish universities for the purpose of teaching agricultural and mechanical arts. The University of Arkansas is one of 106 land-grant universities (after an expansion in 1994) and is a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU), formerly the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC). In 1962, the nation and the land-grant institutions celebrated the centennial anniversary of the act.
