The Judo Club of the University of Arkansas began in 1974 with the arrival of Clyde D. Dollar on the Fayetteville campus. Dollar had been teaching judo for eleven years including four years at the University of South Dakota before deciding to come to Arkansas to study for a Ph. D in history in the fall of 1974. The Judo Club drew its membership from those enrolled in the Judo classes offered by the club in cooperation with the Intramural Office. The club and the classes were open to all University of Arkansas students, staff, and faculty, both men and women. Classes were offered in areas such as basic and advanced techniques, nutrition, competition training, and judo instruction. The goal was to provide access to an entertaining and non-destructive sport, improve physical conditioning and coordination, and teach self-defense techniques to students.
The classes were set up in a way to allow students to qualify for ascension through the ranks of the sport at the end of each course. Many students participated in the classes for multiple years and were active in competitions. Within two years of its founding, the club was hosting statewide judo competitions and summer camps. The next year, the club became nationally competitive with its first match against the University of Utah. During this time, Clyde Dollar served as the chairperson for the United States Judo Association. Dollar used his position to draft a set of rules for intercollegiate competition which he spread to college level judo programs across the country.
