Scope and Content Note

This collection contains a xeroxed copy of typescript (some leaves with autograph revisions overwritten) of Arkansas state capitol architect Mann's unpublished comments, Sept. 30, 1937, on George Washington Donaghey's book, Building a State Capitol (Little Rock, 1937). Original typescript copy of the manuscript is in Arkansas Gazette Foundation library, Little Rock. See John A. Treon, “Politics and Concrete: The Building of the Arkansas State Capitol, 1899-1917,” Arkansas Historical Quarterly (Summer 1972) 31:99-149, in which the Mann manuscript is published (pp. 134-149) for the first time. Cf. also Treon’s unpublished M.A. thesis (University of Arkansas, 1964), “The Building of the Arkansas State Capitol, 1899-1915.”

Biographical Note

George Richard Mann was born in Syracuse, Indiana on July 2, 1856. George got into architecture after getting some encouragement from an uncle and becoming employed with his neighbor W.H. Brown, who worked in architecture. After being employed for two years, Brown encouraged George to apply to MIT who then graduated in 1876. During his career, George has designed many landmark structures within the Little Rock area including the Southern Trust Building, the Bank of Commerce, the State Bank Building (later called the Boyle Building) and some outside of that area including the Commerce National Back and Youree Hotel in Shreveport, Louisiana. George Mann passed away in his home in little Rock on March 20, 1939.

Acquisition Information

The George Richard Mann Manuscript was donated to the Special Collections Department by John Alfred Treon of St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota through Professor Walter Lee Brown in July 1972. The copy was made from original typescript in Arkansas Gazette Foundation Library, Little Rock.
