Scope and Content Note

The collection consists primarily of William Henry Cobb's research and writings on the history of Commonwealth College, including essays, correspondence, newspapers, and photographs. Also included are materials regarding his related research on the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union and regarding his efforts to encourage the University of Arkansas to honor the memory of former professor Dr. Walter Lee Brown.

Biographical Note

William Henry Cobb V was a historian and academic whose research heavily focused on Commonwealth College (Mena, Ark.).

Cobb was born April, 19, 1938, in Little Rock, Arkansas. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Arkansas in 1960 and 1962, then graduated from Tulane University with a doctorate in history in 1969.

Cobb taught history at several universities, including at East Carolina University from 1969-2004. His master's thesis from the University of Arkansas focused on the history of Commonwealth College, as did a number of his later articles and his book, Radical Education in the Rural South: Commonwealth College, 1922-1940 (Wayne State University Press, 2000).

Cobb passed away August 1, 2010, and is buried in Roselawn Memorial Park in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Acquisition Information

The William Henry Cobb Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by William Henry Cobb on March 4, 1998, and additional materials were donated by his widow, Cecilia Moore-Cobb of Greeneville, North Carolina, on May 24, 2016.
