Biographical Note

Mitsuko (Mitsy) Inano Kellam was born in Japan, but moved to to the United States and became a naturalized U.S. citizen. She earned bachelor's degrees from Kinjo College and San Francisco State College, a master's from Loma Linda University, and a Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of Wisconsin. After graduating, Kellam taught on the faculty at Texas Tech University as well as in the Department of Home Economics at the University of Arkansas. In 1983, she married Owen Barnes (1921-1986), and stepped down from teaching, but began volunteering with the Ozark Literacy Council. After Barnes' death, she later remarried, to Ray Albert Kellam (1917-1997). From 1989-1992, Kellam created and published Konnichiwa Kodomotachi (KOKO), a monthly newsletter about the Japanese language and culture, intended for primary students in the United States.

Extent

Arrangement of the Papers

Materials are arranged by the individual who was the materials' primary creator or subject, and further arranged by format or topic.

Some of the original slips used by Kellam to group together copies of KOKO newsletters for a given month also had unrelated documents printed on the reverse. When these documents provided information about Kellam’s organizational involvement, or local events, they were separated out to relevant folders in the collection and replaced with acid-free slips. In cases where such materials are printed on the reverse of newsletter drafts, they have been left in their original locations, but referenced in the scope and content notes of those folders.
