Biographical Note

The Goshen Extension Homemakers Club was organized as the Goshen Home Demonstration Club in February 1945, with 13 members, including Mrs. Horace Langham and Mrs. Ben Clark. According to a club history in a 1958 scrapbook (Box 4), “It was the leading Club of the community until 1953, when the R.C.I. Club was organized and since that time it has worked under leadership of the R.C.I. Club, always cooperating on all community projects.” Like other home demonstration clubs, it focused on providing agricultural and home economics education to community members, and organization members often organize community events and participate in service projects and charitable fundraising efforts.

Goshen’s chapter of the Rural Community Improvement (RCI) program was organized in 1953 following a January 1953 presentation to the community by County Agent Carl Rose and Home Demonstration Agent Margaret H. Brownfield. The group’s first goal, achieved in 1953, was to build a community building.
