Biographical Note
Ruby V. Hughes was born April 13, 1888 in Whitener, Madison County, Arkansas. His parents were William Haggard Hughes, minister and farmer, and Mary Ann Hallum Hughes, artist. Hughes was educated in district schools and attended technical college in Wilburton, Oklahoma. On May 26, 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Infantry and served with the 77th Division in the Meuse-Argonne campaign. After an honorable discharge on June 11, 1919, he returned to Whitener and the family apple business. In 1924, he married Georgia Phillips, an artist. Hughes began writing a column for the Madison County Record in August of 1943. The column "News and Comment" and later "We saw it for you," appeared for approximately fifteen years. He died in Huntsville, Madison County, Arkansas on September 8, 1966.
