Biographical Note

The National Council for International Visitors, formerly known as the National Council for Community Services to International Visitors (COSERV), was established in 1961. It is a professional association of local and national private, non-profit organizations which share a common concern for visitors from abroad and which, through international exchange programs and community support services, foster international understanding and professional growth. Participants in the program are established or potential foreign leaders in government, politics, media, education, science, labor relations and other key fields. NCIV activities include national and regional conferences, publications, field trips, referrals, orientation, and consultation.

There are three categories of membership in NCIV: local community organizations–Councils for International Visitors (CIVs) or International Visitor Centers (IVCs); National Program Agencies; and Associate Members or Associates. Local Organizations are located in cities and communities across the U.S. They arrange professional programs and appointments for international visitors based upon the visitors’ goals and interests.

The United States Agency for International Development (A.I.D.) encourages participants in its training process to become involved in professional, social and cultural activities during their stay in the U.S.
