Biographical Note

Edward Burt (1858-1939) was born in Athens, Pennsylvania to Howard F. and Miranda Burt. After Howard Burt died in 1864, Miranda Burt moved to Middle Grove, New York, where Edward Burt was raised. After graduating from New York State Normal School, Burt married Clara M. Briggs of Oneoata, New York. In 1891 Burt entered Harvard University and received his Phd in 1893. He then became a professor of Natural History at Middlebury College in Vermont. In 1913 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he was appointed Mycologist and Librarian of the Missouri Botanical Garden and professor of botany at Washington University. Burt retired in 1925 and returned to the family farm at Middle Grove, New York in 1932, where he died seven years later. Edward and Clara had four children, Angus Edward, Albert, Farlow, and Howard.

Farlow Burt (1896-1985) was named after his father's colleague, William G. Farlow, a professor of Cryptogamic Botany at Harvard University. After graduating from Middlebury High School in 1913, Farlow moved to St. Louis with his family and then entered Washington University where he planned to study natural history and botany. Farlow Burt served in the Army during World War I and World War II. Between the wars he was active in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) and also taught military science at the University of Arkansas.
