Boston Jail, The. Lewis Bedingfield, Springdale, 6/29/51
Scope and Contents
Recordings of 557 songs (730 texts) are in the University of Arkansas Library. Merlin Mitchell collected the songs dated 1949 and 1950 (Reels 5-88); Irene Carlisle those dated 1951 and 1952 (Reels 89-146); and Mary Celestia Parler those dated 1953 (reels 147 onward). In deference to established custom, "Child ballads" are placed first. All other songs are listed alphabetically by title. Items sung by Negroes are labeled (N) in order to distinguish them from pseudo-Negro songs. The number following the date indicates the reel. All titles are omitted, except Mrs. where a woman is identified by her husband's name or initials. Where no state is given, Arkansas is to be understood.
All are 3 3/4 i.p.s. except where noted. Speed of exceptions is not known.
