Scope and Contents
Contains 27 folders of published writings, poems, and prayers, in addition to texts and drafts of speeches, lectures and articles arranged chronologically. The speeches and articles concern, most notably, Brooks Hays' interest and involvement in politics, particularly in reference to the democratic process, the machinery of government, intergovernmental relations, and economic practices and theories; also Brooks Hays' thoughts on religion, particularly church-state relations and ecumenicalism; and Brooks Hays' philosophy of education. Some of the speeches and articles refer to the Little Rock School desegregation crisis of 1957-1958; to race relations and civil rights; to the development of the South; to world peace; to the Tennessee Valley Authority; to his trip to Russia in 1958 and to Africa in 1963; to the "American Dream"; to amnesty; to the "Watergate" scandal during Richard Nixon's term of office; and to other areas of interest and concern.
