Scope and Contents

Contains 34 folders of correspondence, speeches, convention proceedings, delegate lists, credentials, notices of contest, broadsides, clippings, and other material concerning state and local political campaigns and conventions. Significant candidates found throughout the files include: Milton Drew Bowers, Osro Cobb, John W. Grabiel, A.L. Kinney, Harry Hilton Myers, Smead Powell, Harmon Liveright Remmel, Pratt Cates Remmel, Wallace Townsend, and John I. Worthington, all largely Republican gubernatorial nominees. Clippings, dated 1950-54, pertain to Arkansas state political activities, especially Republican candidate Jefferson W. Speck’s campaign for governor, 1952; attempt to replace State Chairman Osro Cobb, 1952; Pratt Cates Remmel's gubernatorial nomination, 1954; and patronage. Files 6 and 16 include credentials to the Arkansas Republican State Conventions of July 14, 1914, and May 1, 1924, arranged alphabetically by county. Files 8 and 19 include mailing lists for selected counties and county central committee lists, arranged alphabetically by county. File 20 includes a George Leonard Mallory letter to Harmon Liveright Remmel concerning political conditions in Arkansas, especially the farmer-labor alliance and the Ku Klux Klan and their affect on the Republican party. Dates are: 1896-1954 and no date. Correspondents include: Milton Drew Bowers, Gordon Hensley Campbell, Powell Clayton, Osro Cobb, John W. Grabiel, Will H. Hays, Scipio A.
