Scope and Contents

From the Series:

Records held in the collection document six exhibits about Fay Jones and his work. The earliest have no exact date but they were shown at Texas Tech University and Roger Williams University, probably in the 1980s. The Jones office made enlarged and mounted copies of photographs of projects to send to these schools. When the exhibits were over, the Items were shipped back to the office and then became a part of the collection. According to an undated poster, the Pine Bluff Community Arts Center in Arkansas had an exhibit on Jones. The first major exhibit about Jones in Arkansas was mounted by the Old State House Museum in Little Rock in 1999. Titled, Outside the Pale: the Architecture of Fay Jones, it was a retrospective featuring enlarged photographs, copies of published drawings, a video recording, and 3-dimensional objects such as pottery, wood pieces, and models. The Fay Jones Collection has kept a series of the framed photographs and several 3-dimensional objects. On April 21, 2001, an exhibit was opened in El Dorado that was based on the Old State Exhibit. Titled, "Outside the Pale: A Homecoming," its focus was on Jones's life in El Dorado; it featured newspaper articles, photographs, models, and some of the 3-dimensional Items and photographs from the Old State House. From November, 2001, until January, 2002, the Walton Arts Center in Fayetteville presented an exhibit, Fay Jones: Artist/Architect. The exhibit featured many of the photographs and artifacts from the Old State House exhibit, but also featured framed, original drawings and sketches. The Items have been saved in their frames in order to mount the exhibit or parts of it in the future. The original drawings and sketches that are framed can be accessed for viewing. In September, 2004, the University Libraries mounted a memorial exhibit for Fay Jones. Items from the collection were on display and have been returned to the collection.
