Scope and Contents
The L. C. Bates correspondence coincides with Mr. Bates's tenure as state field director for the NAACP. The file also includes honors and awards bestowed on him from 1977 to 1980. Mr. Bates died on August 22, 1980. The series includes copies of his death certificate; letters, cards and telegrams of condolence to Mrs. Bates; programs of his memorial service; and guest books used at the memorial service and at the Bates home.
